LEXUS AND ADIDAS CUSTOMISE THE ALL-NEW RX TO CELEBRATE MARVEL STUDIOS’ “BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER”

  • adidas-developed custom wrap for the all-new Lexus RX creates an automotive extension of the “Wakanda Forever” capsule collection
  • adidas S.E.E.D. students reimagine the RX’s interior, taking inspiration from the Marvel Studios movie and with mentorship from Lexus’ Calty Design Research
  • Students’ design realised by 3D printing company Carbon using breakthrough Carbon DLS digital light synthesizing technology
  • Collaborative project filmed by Cami Thomas for a short documentary feature and celebrated with a limited-edition T-shirt designed by adidas S.E.E.D. students

Lexus today unveils a transformation of its all-new RX 500h F SPORT Performance, inspired by Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This unique version of the large luxury SUV has been created in a collaboration between Lexus’ Calty North American design centre, adidas, adidas S.E.E.D. and 3D printing specialists Carbon, coinciding with the new movie’s worldwide release.

The project is in the spirit of Marvel “What Ifs” and helps celebrate the recent launch of adidas’ “Wakanda Forever” collection by bringing its Black Panther designs into the automotive space. Created for the world’s best athletes, adidas’ performance sportswear embodies the question “What If… Wakanda had a national athletics team?”.

The RX has been given a full body wrap that builds on the custom identity adidas has envisioned for the fictional African nation. It features a tribal print in the signature Wakandan purple used throughout the adidas sportswear collection. The bonnet is inlaid with a diamond pattern inspired by the Black Panther’s claw necklace. Characters from the fictional Wakandan alphabet are used for the F SPORT and Lexus badging, including the word “Vibe-Branium,” denoting the model’s full name: the Lexus RX 500h Vibe-Branium ( WAKANDA_image2 ) AWD DIRECT4.

Michael Moore, Lexus International General Manager, commented: “The all-new RX 500h is part of our expanding Lexus Electrified portfolio with evolved, innovative technology that elevates the driver’s experience. There’s an athleticism in the RX’s performance that makes it a perfect fit for joining the “Wakanda Forever” team.”

Students from adidas S.E.E.D. (School for Experiential Education in Design) were challenged to reimagine the vehicle’s interior, again taking the new movie sequel as their inspiration.  They were guided through the creative process by Calty Design Research, Lexus’ North American design centre, with workshops on Lexus design principles, creative processes, colours, materials and the power of collaboration.

The custom build will feature future-focused designs, textures and materials, with adidas’s custom Wakandan tribal gold print featured on the seat upholstery, door panel inserts and purple sections of the steering wheel. The F SPORT door sill plate is translated in the Wakandan alphabet ( WAKANDA_image3 ) and the steering wheel is embroidered with “Wakanda Forever” ( WAKANDA_image4 ). Key tactile areas such as the steering wheel pad and front and rear headrests are covered in the Carbon 3D printed energy-returning athletic shoe mid-sole material used in the adidas 4D-FWD. The front head rests include the Lexus emblem and the rear centre head rest carries the iconic adidas’s logo. A laser-cut wood finish around the shift lever and gold trim accents help create a distinctively Wakandan environment.

The collaborative project has been recorded in a documentary short film by multi-talented visual storyteller Cami Thomas. Set for release on digital platforms, this feature stands as another example of Lexus’ mission to inspire and nurture emerging creative talent.

Alex Shen, Chief Designer at Calty Design Research, said: “Lexus, adidas and Black Panther may seem like brands that come from totally different worlds but the thread that draws everything together is the pursuit and leadership in unique story-telling and innovative technology.”

Cheresse Thornhill-Goldson, Director, Design Education & Growth | S.E.E.D., adidas, added: “A critical aspect of our curriculum is “open-source” product creation where we partner with experts across various industries to educate and co-create with our S.E.E.D. designers to bring unique products to life. So, collaborating with Lexus, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, Carbon, Calty, and Annex to design the Lexus RX 500h Vibe-Branium Direct4 was such a transformative experience for our students. The end result is a powerful example of what can happen when we leverage the ‘collective genius’ across disciplines.”

Carbon, an adidas partner since 2017, has revolutionised athletic footwear by providing the technology platform for the production of adidas 4D midsoles. Carbon DLS™ (Digital Light Synthesis™) technology is pioneered by 3D printing specialists, aligning innovation and sustainability in collaboration with adidas to create a portfolio of athletic footwear that meets specific performance needs. In addition, Carbon’s footprint on the silver screen contributing to costumes, animatronics and other-worldly environments make them the perfect partner to help realise the S.E.E.D students’ vision.

The project also being celebrated with a limited-edition T-shirt designed by adidas S.E.E.D. students. This features an African proverb in Wakandan script, “ WAKANDA_image5 ” (“Educate a Woman, Educate a Nation”), rendered in the traditional Japanese Tategaki style. On the back of the shirt, the periodic table is transcribed in Wakandan, celebrating how the country’s vibranium resources helped it build its future-focused society.

HYBRID ELECTRIC WITH A PERFORMANCE EDGE: THE ALL-NEW RX 500h

  • A new direction in hybrid electric technology
  • Introduced in the RX 500h F SPORT Performance, part of the all-new fifth generation RX range
  • New 2.4-litre turbocharged hybrid electric powertrain with six-speed automatic transmission
  • A major step forward in dynamic quality, with DIRECT4 all-wheel drive torque control, Dynamic Rear Steering and strengthened braking system
  • Complete package maximises the control, comfort, confidence and sense of connection that area central to the Lexus Driving Signature

The benefits of electrification are not just about making cars cleaner and more fuel efficient. There are also real opportunities to deliver a more exciting driving experience, as Lexus’ radical new RX 500h F SPORT Performance model proves.

This exclusive member of the all-new RX family of large luxury SUVs is a new kind of hybrid electric model – one with a primary focus on performance. The hybrid powertrain is rich in innovation: a new, high-torque, turbocharged 2.4-litre engine, a six-speed automatic transmission and a separate rear electric eAxle enabling Lexus’ new DIRECT4 precision all-wheel drive control.

This advanced powertrain is just one element in the equation. It works in harmony with a fine-tuned dynamic package of chassis, steering, suspension and braking to give the driver a constant sense of connection, control comfort and confidence. These are the key elements in the brand-defining Lexus Driving Signature, delivered to great effect in the RX 500h.

Chief Engineer Takaaki Ohno explains: “Our goal with the RX 500h was to create a car that gives an exhilarating driving experience and generates a dialogue with the driver. To achieve this, we have further evolved the Lexus Driving Signature by thoroughly strengthening the vehicle fundamentals, as well as adopting Lexus’ new four-wheel drive force system, DIRECT4.

“The RX 500h delivers a powerful, direct, and responsive driving experience through a hybrid electric system with a new high output rear motor. The brakes offer excellent control and rigidity, and the car is equipped with Dynamic Rear Steering with a large steering angle that provides high manoeuvrability and a sense of security at high speeds. This further enhances interaction with the car and delivers a pleasant driving experience. Its addition to the RX range, along with fuel-efficient hybrid electric and plug-in hybrid electric models, provides a diverse line-up that can meet the needs and preferences of a wider range of customers.“

A new direction in hybrid electric technology

The new hybrid powertrain architecture is unlike anything Lexus has produced before. The essential self-charging principle is the same, but the front electric motor is positioned between the engine and the new automatic transmission, with a clutch on each side. This design gives strong power delivery while retaining the EV driving capability that’s characteristic of a Lexus full hybrid electric system. It is the most powerful RX yet, with total power output of 371 DIN hp and 550 Nm maximum torque. This translates into 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.2 seconds. This is the kind of performance you might expect from a three-litre V6 engine, but with superior fuel economy – the RX 500h achieves 8.0 to 8.3 l/100 km on the WLTP combined cycle.

A new, compact, six-speed automatic transmission has been introduced for the first time. It’s being used in preference to the eCVT system in other Lexus hybrid electric powertrains to better realise the potential of the high torque from the turbo engine and motor. It is engineered to avoid frequent shifts and offers the driver the option of manual operation using paddle controls on the steering wheel. When the driver presses the throttle, response is instant with a powerful, linear increase in speed.

The RX 500h is the first Lexus model to use a bi-polar nickel-metal hydride battery (NiMH). This technology reduces resistance so the battery has a higher load and unload capacity. It also allows the unit’s size to be optimised – 1.4 times the number of cells can be accommodated in the same space compared to the standard NiMH battery. These qualities enable twice the power to be achieved from a unit of the same size. The driver enjoys the benefit of stronger acceleration while the battery’s location beneath the car’s rear seat helps the low centre of gravity and avoids loss of cabin or load space. The battery is also quieter, thanks to refinement of its air-cooling system.

DIRECT4 all-wheel drive force control

The RX 500h is the first RX to adopt Lexus’ new DIRECT4, an intelligent electronic control system that instantaneously and seamlessly adjusts the front and rear drive torque to all four wheels to provide optimum grip and maintain stability.  Drive to the rear wheels is provided by the rear eAxle with a separate electric motor and inverter.  It makes for a more comfortable ride with better body control and a more rewarding experience for the driver, communicating a more connected feel between the road and the steering wheel.

Bespoke dynamic features

Like the rest of the new RX range, the RX 500h has the fundamental benefit of the Lexus GA-K platform, giving the car a low centre of gravity, high body rigidity and a balanced chassis with good inertia characteristics. Building on this, the cars dynamic elements have been tuned and engineered with a performance focus. These include Dynamic Rear Steering which automatically adopts the best steering angle for the rear wheels, according to the car’s speed and direction. At low speeds, the wheels move counter to those at the front for nimble manoeuvring, while at high speeds they turn in line with the front axle, helping keep the car stable. The system gives the rear wheels turning angles of up to four degrees.

More powerful brakes are fitted – 400 mm ventilated front discs with six-piston aluminium callipers that are opposed rather than floating (as on other new RX models), giving greater rigidity. With an enlarged pad surface area, they give liner, direct and stable stopping performance. They are also a stand-out feature for the model, being painted black and bearing the Lexus logo. Adaptive Variable Suspension is also provided, with fast-response, independent damping control applied at each wheel.

Performance styling

This is a car that stands out, with styling features added to the new RX’s “Next Chapter” design that express its performance character. These include dedicated split-spoke 21-inch alloy wheels, body colour wheel arch trims and sills, piano black details, aero profile bumpers, F SPORT badging and an exclusive mesh pattern for the grille. Inside, the theme continues with the F SPORT steering wheel, shift lever and scuff plates and an aluminium pedal set. The sports front seats are finished in leather with tactile Ultrasuede bolsters.

  • Choice of coupe, convertible, or self-charging hybrid electric coupe

  • Lexus Bespoke Build available for all grades, allowing Guests to customize their vehicle

  • Now on sale at Canadian dealerships

TORONTO, ONTARIO – NOVEMBER 14th, 2022 – High performance and high style combine in the Lexus LC series – the flagship coupes and convertibles that make every moment exhilarating. New this year, Lexus now offers Guests the Bespoke Build for the self-charging hybrid electric LC 500h.

“The LC series is daring in conception, powerful in performance, and luxuriously advanced,” said Martin Gilbert, Director of Lexus Canada. “We’re thrilled to offer our guests a selection of breathtaking models, all designed to deliver pure sensory exhilaration.”

The LC series features the dynamic styling and exquisite craftsmanship that a flagship automobile demands. These include a long wheelbase, compact front and rear overhangs, a notably low hood, an athletic profile set off by a sweeping roofline, sensual curves, muscular wheel arches, and a wind-shearing silhouette.

Inside, the 2+2 cabin is designed for driving pleasure and luxurious comfort. Driver and passengers are surrounded by a relaxing environment that combines elegance and sophistication, reflecting Lexus Takumi craftsmanship in every line, curve, and stitch. The cockpit is an invitation to high-spirited driving, with all switches and controls thoughtfully placed at one’s fingertips, while information displays are arranged to minimize eye movement and keep the driver’s focus on the road.

The LC 500 Convertible lets in the sky with an exclusive four-layer lightweight soft top that is a marvel of engineering. Crafted to maintain the LC Convertible’s aerodynamic and emotionally-charged design, the soft top features fabric carefully selected and manufactured to ensure optimal tension – both to eliminate wrinkling and improve sound insulation. This top is capable of opening or closing in just 15 seconds at speeds up to 50 km/h. An animated display on the instrument panel lets the driver monitor its progress, and its innovative folding system enables the roof to be stored in an exceptionally small space, so it doesn’t intrude on luggage capacity.

Take thrilling to the razor’s edge, with a commanding blend of raw power, sharp performance, and remarkable balance that lets guests perfectly hit every apex and straightaway with unlimited confidence. For the LC series, Lexus designers and engineers worked in harmony to ensure every component contributes to LC’s inspired performance capabilities. LC’s dynamic performance starts with a rear-wheel-drive platform, an ultra-low centre of gravity, and near perfect 52/48 front/rear weight distribution. It’s then offered in two powertrain options:

  • The LC 500 and LC 500 Convertible feature a 471 peak-horsepower 5.0L naturally aspirated V8 paired with a 10-speed direct shift automatic.

  • The LC 500h features a 354 net system horsepower Lexus self-charging hybrid electric powertrain built around a 3.5L V6 and multistage continuously variable transmission.

All models feature Lexus Navigation with Remote, a powerful yet intuitive bundle of connectivity technologies – fully compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and featuring Remote Connect, Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Destination Assist. Other technology features include a 10.3” display screen, Lexus App connectivity, Bluetooth connectivity, and Sirius XM Satellite Radio integration.

As a Lexus, every LC series model also features an impressive package of advanced safety technologies – including Lexus Safety System +, a backup camera, the Blind Spot Monitor system with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, eight airbags, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Toyota Starts Canadian Production of Fifth Generation Lexus RX Luxury SUV

TMMC-RX_8625

CAMBRIDGE, ON, November 8, 2022 – Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) started yesterday producing the fifth generation of the Lexus RX luxury SUV: the all-new 2023 Lexus RX.

In 2003, TMMC became Toyota’s first facility outside of Japan entrusted to produce Lexus vehicles – a great honour within Toyota – and has since assembled more than 1.5 million Lexus RX vehicles. Today, as well as the RX and RX hybrid, TMMC builds the Lexus NX and NX Hybrid, as well as the Toyota RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid.

“Producing the all-new 2023 Lexus RX 350, RX 350h and RX 500h for the North American market reflects the continued trust that Toyota Motor Corporation has in our world-class Canadian team members, our commitment to quality, and our customer focus,” said TMMC President, Frank Voss.

Canada’s largest auto manufacturer and leading maker of electrified vehicles, TMMC has manufactured vehicles in Canada for more than 30 years and currently employs more than 8,500 team members at its facilities in Cambridge and Woodstock, Ontario.  Committed to producing vehicles in Canada, Toyota has invested more than CAD $9.8B in its Canadian operations since 1985 and has built more than nine million vehicles over that period of time.

TMMC’s culture is aligned with the Lexus focus on quality, making them one of the very best automotive manufacturing facilities in the world. This commitment to quality has earned TMMC a total of 20 J.D. Power Awards – more than any other auto manufacturing plant in the Americas, and the second most of any plant globally.

About the 2023 Lexus RX

Crafted right here in Canada, the 2023 Lexus RX sets the stage for the next chapter of the Lexus brand.

The next chapter for Lexus is centered around four pillars: Design, Lexus Driving Signature, Electrification and Advanced Technology. The all-new RX plays a key role in leading the brand forward on each of these dimensions.

Design: The RX has been refined from the inside out. The signature Lexus spindle grille has evolved into a spindle body that seamlessly commands the front. And, perhaps the most notable expression of future Lexus design is the elegant new block letter ‘LEXUS’ rear badging and full-width tail lamp.

Lexus Driving Signature: Lexus Driving Signature results from an entirely new approach to vehicle development, wherein all performance characteristics and tuning decisions are approved at the highest level of the organization. This ensures a uniquely Lexus experience where each vehicle exhibits a direct, linear driving feel that is consistent across the lineup.

Electrification: TMMC will assemble two electrified options of the fifth generation RX, including the RX 350h powered by a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain, and RX 500h F SPORT with a 2.4-litre turbo hybrid powertrain.

Advanced Technology: The biggest enhancement to in-vehicle technology is the inclusion of the all-new Lexus Interface multimedia system. Developed in North America, Lexus Interface uses a standard 9.8-inch touchscreen to put an array of multimedia features within easy reach. On select models, the available 14-inch touch screen delivers an even more immersive multimedia experience. Lexus Interface incorporates a new virtual assistant, developed with a human-centric approach and intended to be the primary way in which guests interact with the new multimedia system. The system enables a voice-first approach to access navigation, media, phone, and certain vehicle features such as the climate control system and window opening/closing.
